Trail summary
Hike overview
Enjoy the natural heritage of the Mount Lofty Ranges with the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden's Nature Trail. This moderately difficult (grade 3) 2.2-kilometre loop winds through a seven-hectare pocket of remnant bushland, offering a glimpse into the plant communities that thrived here before European settlement.
The trail is a haven for native flora, with a mature canopy of Stringybark eucalypts providing a shady haven for a diverse understory. Look out for a vibrant display of wildflowers, shrubs and climbers bursting into bloom during spring and early summer. Keen observers might even spot butterflies laying eggs in autumn, or hear the rustle of skinks amongst the leaf litter on warm days.
The seasonal variations add another layer of intrigue. The birdlife is particularly impressive, changing throughout the year. Keep an ear out for the songs of these feathered residents as you explore.
Interestingly, the Piccadilly Valley, where this trail lies, was once almost completely cleared of trees in the early 20th century. The harvested timber was used for copper mines and Adelaide factories. Thankfully, since then, some areas have regenerated, forming a second-generation forest. While not completely untouched, this pocket of native vegetation offers a valuable glimpse into the region's ecological history.
The trail is a popular choice for a moderate walk, taking approximately 45 minutes to complete. However, be aware that it can be steep in sections, particularly after rainfall. Wearing sturdy walking shoes and taking care, especially in wet weather, is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience. It's also worth noting that this trail serves as an alternative route for the longer Heysen Trail.
