Uluru, Kata Tjuta & Aboriginal Culture near Alice Springs

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, located 462 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, is a place of profound natural beauty and rich Aboriginal culture. This World Heritage-listed area is home to two of Australia’s most iconic natural wonders: Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas).

Uluru and Kata Tjuta are much more than just photo opportunities. These ancient rock formations hold deep cultural significance for the Anangu Traditional Owners. Anangu creation stories, or Tjukurpa, are woven into the landscape, and walking tracks offer a unique opportunity to learn about this rich heritage. Walks range from easy strolls around the base of Uluru to the more challenging 7.4-kilometre Valley of the Winds walk at Kata Tjuta, which rewards hikers with panoramic desert views.

Witness the majesty of Uluru as it changes colour throughout the day. Explore Kata Tjuta’s 36 weathered domes, Kata Tjuta, meaning “many heads” in the Pitjantjatjara language. Learn about the park’s unique plants and animals, and discover the traditional foods, or bush tucker, of the Anangu people.

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is a living cultural landscape. The Anangu people have lived here for over 30,000 years, and their connection to the land is deeply respected. Stay on designated walking tracks and be mindful of cultural sensitivities.
