Hike Summary

From the white sands of Coningham Beach take this wonderful bushwalk along the cliffs with spectacular view across North West Bay to kunanyi / Mount Wellington, Tinderbox and Bruny Island. Along the way you will often see white-bellied sea-eagles soaring overhead. During morning and evening walks the bush will ring with birdsong. Rustic wooden seats give an excuse for a pause to soak up the peace and the scenery. Halfway along you will come to Legacy Beach, a great place for children to play and to stop for a cuppa.

Safety

Do not approach cliff edges.

About the region

Not far beyond the hustle and bustle of Hobart, Coningham Nature Recreation Area is the locals’ best kept secret. The idyllic bays of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and empty beaches fringed by Tasmanian native plants can be explored via the walking tracks that weave along the coastline and up onto the hilltop.

Views of the bays and hamlets are revealed through the trees and colourful huts line the beaches, reminiscent of a simpler time. Coningham is a place to immerse yourself in nature and simply let your mind wander.

Coningham Nature Recreation Area is a significant home for many other locals, too; white-bellied sea eagles and wedge-tailed eagles frequent the skies and little penguins seek refuge on the shores after returning from fishing expeditions. The reserve is also an important refuge for a number of threatened plant and animal species.

Getting there

Coningham Clifftop Track is accessed from a numer of locations along the coast in Coningham including Stubbings Street and Coningham Road. There is parking available at the start and the end of the track.

Tips

Do not approach cliff edges.
