Hike Summary
This section of the track begins at the western end of the Casuarina Sands car park where it hugs the river and passes river oaks, red stringy barks and scribbly gums on the drier slopes. Sometimes moving away from the river across open grazing country, the track climbs high above the river as it nears Kambah Pool. There are great views of the river and surrounding countryside all the way. The distance and relative difficulty makes this walk suitable only as a one-way excursion, so plan transport at both ends.
About the region
Murrumbidgee Discovery Track
From Kambah Pool it is possible to explore the river’s diverse habitats with magnificent river views from a variety of vantage points. If you go early in the morning you’ll have every chance of seeing one of the many wombats that call Kambah Pool home. Kambah Pool and surrounds is also a good spot for bird watching. In late autumn you might see hundreds of migrating Yellow-faced Honeyeaters (Lichenostomus chrysops), or closer to Red Rocks Gorge you may be lucky enough to spot a Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrines), the fastest bird in the world. Kambah Pool is also one of the access points for the 27 kilometre Murrumbidgee Discovery Track. You can walk this entire track, and from Kambah Pool south to Point Hut Crossing it is also mountain bike friendly. Please note: Kambah Pool gates are closed from 6pm to 8am over winter, and from 9pm to 8am during daylight savings. No bins are provided - please take your rubbish home with you. No dogs allowed. For dog friendly recreation along the Murrumbidgee River you can go to Uriarra Crossing, Murrays Corner or Point Hut Crossing.
