Hiking the Pyrenees: A Natural and Historical Journey

The Pyrenees Ranges offer a captivating blend of natural beauty and historical significance. This region, located approximately 200 kilometres north-west of Melbourne near the town of Avoca, is renowned for its rugged mountain ranges, diverse wildlife, and abundant wildflowers. Visitors can explore the area through a variety of walks, bushwalks, and hikes, or simply relax at picnic areas while taking in the spectacular scenery.

The Pyrenees have a rich history, shaped by both Indigenous and European cultures. The Jajowurrong people were the original inhabitants, with the area later explored by European settlers in the 19th century. Evidence of the region’s gold mining and slate quarrying past can still be seen today.

The park’s diverse ecosystems support a rich array of flora and fauna. From the Box-Ironbark forests of the foothills to the mixed species stringybark forests at higher elevations, the Pyrenees offer a haven for a variety of plant and animal life. Birdwatchers may spot Wedge-tailed Eagles, parrots, and smaller species like Rainbow Bee-eaters. Other native animals such as kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, and possums can also be encountered.

For those seeking a leisurely day out, the Waterfalls Picnic Area provides a tranquil setting with picnic facilities and short walking tracks. More remote camping options are available at Cameron’s Track Campground.
