Exploring Kowen Forest: Trails in Canberra’s Hinterland

Kowen Forest, located just outside Canberra, New South Wales (approximately 30 kilometres from the city centre), is the largest commercial pine plantation in the ACT. It’s a popular destination for a variety of outdoor activities including bushwalking, hiking, running, mountain biking, and horse riding. The forest also offers orienteering courses for those who enjoy this navigational challenge.

Walks, bushwalks, and hikes are all well-catered for within Kowen Forest. If you’re looking for walking tracks, there are two main options:

The Glenburn Heritage Precinct: This 3.7-kilometre return journey starts from the Old Kowen Homestead and follows Kowen Road before connecting with Fernside Road and finally Charcoal Kiln Road.

Molonglo Gorge to Blue Tiles: This scenic 6.5-kilometre track follows the Molonglo River and leads to a picnic area.

Spanning over 4,670 hectares, Kowen Forest encompasses the Old Kowen Homestead Recreation Area campground. The forest itself dates back to 1926 when the first plantings began.

Mountain bike enthusiasts will appreciate the extensive network of trails located in the eastern section of Kowen Forest. The forest even plays host to the Kowen Winter Trails marathon, an event that qualifies runners for the prestigious Six Foot Track race.

Please be aware that as a commercial pine plantation, you might encounter forestry operations or heavy machinery while exploring Kowen Forest. It’s important to follow all signage for your safety and avoid any closed areas. Additionally, vehicles are not permitted within the forest, and motorbike riding or 4WD access requires a permit from Access Canberra. There’s no drinking water available here, so plan accordingly and bring your own supplies.
