Hike Overview
The Fish Cannery Walking Trail on Kangaroo Island offers a rewarding 1.5-hour journey (4km return) through native bushland. This easy grade 3 hike is perfect for nature enthusiasts and casual walkers alike.
The trailhead is conveniently located at the end of Scenic Drive, opposite Wattle Avenue and where Lierich Drive begins. The American River Progress Association keeps brochures stocked here, or you can download one in advance.
The path winds its way through the scrub, offering opportunities to spot abundant birdlife and native flora. During flowering season, keep an eye out for vibrant orchids. Listen for the distinctive calls of Glossy-Black Cockatoos, which are frequently seen feeding along the trail.
The journey takes you to the ruins of a historic fish cannery, built in the late 1890s. Take a moment to ponder the island's past and imagine the bustling activity that once took place here.
For a scenic variation on your return trip, consider walking back along the beach. This alternative route allows you to observe a variety of seabirds and waders in their natural habitat.
An alternative starting point exists at The Corner, the intersection of Buick Drive, Scenic Drive, Redbanks Road, and Tangara Drive. Here, a pleasant 1.3km walking path runs alongside the road, eventually connecting with the main trail.
Track Grade
Grade 3 (Moderate) - Walks for Most Fitness Levels: Grade 3 on the AWTGS represents moderate walking tracks. These are ideal for walkers with some fitness who are comfortable with some hills and uneven terrain. While suitable for most ages, some bushwalking experience is recommended to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Tracks may have short, steep hill sections, a rough surface, and many steps. The total distance of a Grade 3 walk can be up to 20 kilometers.

Getting there

Take a ferry with Sealink or KI Connect, fly in with QantasLink, or embark on a scenic Southern Ocean Drive road trip for a memorable arrival experience. The trail begins at the carpark and trailhead at the end of Scenic Drive, opposite Wattle Avenue and where the dirt road Lierich Drive begins.
