On short overnighters in warm conditions, or trips built around cold food, a stove may add little beyond weight and setup time. Working out which of these applies to your trip is really the first decision, before you even get to stove type.

Canister gas: the default for most Australian trips

Canister gas stoves use pre-pressurised gas canisters, typically butane, isobutane, or propane blends, and they’re what most Australian hikers reach for first. Within that category, the design splits two ways that matter in practice. Sit-on-top canister stoves screw directly onto the canister. Managing canister fuel and waste

One of the genuine frustrations of canister stoves is managing partially used canisters. Carrying multiple half-full canisters “just in case” quickly adds weight and bulk. A simple solution is to weigh canisters at home and mark the empty weight on the base, which lets you plan more accurately around how much fuel actually remains. No-stove systems make the most sense on short overnighters, in warm conditions, on high-distance days, and for hikers who are genuinely comfortable with cold food. It’s worth treating this as a real option alongside the others rather than a fallback for when something goes wrong.
