Mostly I use an online route planner (thanks THA), but I also use topo maps if they exist for the area. personally I prefer paper maps for planning but they are getting harder and harder to come by these days.

I start by checking out some reliable hiking websites or apps for trail recommendations. Then, I look at the difficulty level, distance, and terrain to make sure it suits my fitness level and preferences. I also take into account the weather forecast and pack accordingly. Safety first, right? And of course, I always let someone know where I’m going, just in case. 🥾

If you don’t mind paying for an app the Strava route planner is excellent but only available on the paid version. Personally I wouldn’t be without it, can download your route and use offline when there’s no reception. Can also share your planned route, I always share with my wife who is my emergency contact in case the unthinkable happens.
