Trail Hiking Australia does not host its own route planner.
However, there are several reliable online tools that can assist with route visualisation, elevation analysis and GPX file creation.
Online route planners are best used as preparation aids. They are not a substitute for independent research, official information sources or field navigation skills.
Recommended Route Planning Tools
Two browser-based planners commonly used by hikers are:
GPX.studio
https://gpx.studio/A powerful GPX viewer and editor suited to users who want detailed control over route files. It allows you to create, edit and export GPX tracks and analyse elevation and distance data.
Suunto Route Planner
https://routeplanner.suunto.com/A more visual, user-friendly option that allows route drawing, elevation analysis and terrain visualisation. It can be used even if you do not own a Suunto device.
Important Planning Considerations
Digital route planners assist preparation, but they do not verify access, current conditions or trail legality.
Before undertaking any hike:
- Check official land manager websites
• Review closures and alerts
• Assess weather forecasts
• Confirm access and parking arrangements
• Cross-check routes using multiple sources
• Leave a Trip Intention
Never rely on a single digital platform when planning a hike.
To estimate difficulty and walking time, use the Walking Track Grade and Time Calculator here:
