A Personal Locator Beacon, or PLB, is a small handheld device that transmits your GPS coordinates to emergency services once you activate it. It works through the global Cospas-Sarsat satellite system, so it doesn’t need mobile phone coverage, a subscription, or any ongoing cost beyond registering it. For anyone heading into remote Australian terrain, I’d put a PLB among the most important pieces of safety equipment you can carry, because its entire job is to work at the exact moment everything else about your trip has gone wrong.
The confusing part is that “PLB” gets used loosely, and it’s easy to end up unsure whether you actually need a PLB, an EPIRB, or an ELT. There are three categories of 406MHz distress beacon, and they’re often mixed up, but they’re built for different environments and carrying the wrong one is a real problem, not just a technicality.
PLB, EPIRB or ELT: Getting the Right Device
PLBs are the ones built for bushwalking and hiking. They’re small, lightweight, and designed for personal use on land. When you activate one, it transmits your location to the Cospas-Sarsat satellite network, which relays the signal to the relevant rescue coordination centre. If you’re a hiker looking for a distress beacon, a PLB is what you need.
EPIRBs, by contrast, are designed for marine use. They’re built to float upright in water and use the water surface as a reflector to improve the satellite signal, and the ballast needed to do that is exactly what makes them heavier and bulkier than a PLB. They’re not suitable for bushwalking and shouldn’t be purchased for that purpose. EPIRBs and PLBs are frequently confused, enough that the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) specifically requests that the correct terminology be used. So it’s worth being direct about it: if it’s for bushwalking, it’s a PLB.
The third type, an ELT or Emergency Locator Transmitter, is an aviation device, typically a fixed unit installed in aircraft that activates automatically on impact. It’s not designed for personal use and isn’t relevant to hikers, so once you’ve ruled out EPIRBs and ELTs, a PLB is where your attention should stay.
Buying and Registering a PLB
Once you know a PLB is what you need, the next step is buying and registering the right one. All 406 MHz PLBs purchased for Australian use should meet Australian Standards and be registered with AMSA. Registration is free and does not expire, although your contact and emergency details must be kept current, which matters because that’s the information a rescue coordination centre will be working from if you ever need to activate it.
If you’re buying a PLB overseas, make sure it meets Australian Standards and ACMA requirements. Overseas beacons are normally coded to the country in which they are sold and cannot be registered with AMSA unless they are compatible with Australian requirements and recoded with the Australian country code where necessary. The simplest option, and the one I’d take, is to buy an Australian-compliant model from a reputable Australian retailer and avoid that whole complication.
Because activating a PLB sets a genuine search and rescue operation in motion, it’s worth knowing what to do if it goes off by accident. If your PLB is accidentally activated, switch it off immediately and contact AMSA on 1800 641 792. There is no penalty for accidental activation, but notifying AMSA promptly helps prevent an unnecessary search and rescue response, which is the whole reason that call matters.
Taking a PLB Across Borders
The Cospas-Sarsat system is global, so an Australian PLB can be detected anywhere on Earth if deployed correctly. That doesn’t mean you can just pack it and go, though. Carrying or activating a PLB on land is illegal in some countries, so before travelling, check the regulations for your destination via the Cospas-Sarsat SPOC directory or the National Regulations for PLBs. Check with your airline too, as requirements for carrying distress beacons vary between carriers and airports.
If you do activate your beacon overseas, the rescue coordination centre of the country where the signal is detected will manage the response, not Australia. AMSA will provide registration details and support information but does not coordinate the rescue, and response quality varies significantly by country depending on the resources, terrain, and weather conditions at the time.
The same principle works in reverse. An internationally registered PLB can be activated in Australia, and Australian authorities will coordinate the search and rescue response, provided the beacon is correctly coded and registered to your country of residence. If you permanently relocate to Australia and want to register the beacon with AMSA, it may first need to be recoded with the Australian country code and must meet Australian standards.
A PLB Is a Last Resort, Not a Plan
None of this changes what a PLB actually is: a last-resort device. Activating one sets a significant rescue operation in motion. It does not replace preparation, navigation skills, or sound decision-making on the trail. What it does give you is a critical safety net for when everything else has failed, which is exactly why it’s worth keeping in proper working order rather than just packing it away and forgetting about it.
