Forest Headwaters Above the Yarra Valley
Overview
Yarra State Forest sits in the ranges east of Melbourne, above the settled Yarra Valley and around the upper catchments that feed the Yarra River system. It is part of a broader belt of public forest in Victoria’s Central Highlands, with steep ridges, deeply cut creek valleys and long stretches of native forest giving the area a more remote feel than its distance from the city might suggest.
This is a place shaped as much by water as by topography. The forested headwaters of creeks such as Britannia Creek, along with tributaries including the Little Yarra River and Hoddles Creek, help define the character of the area and connect it to the valleys below.

The appeal of Yarra State Forest is in its rugged upland scenery rather than one single landmark. Expect a landscape of forested spurs, enclosed gullies, winding creek lines and pockets of open views where the country drops away toward the Yarra Valley. In places the terrain shifts from broad ridges to tight, sheltered valleys, which gives the forest a strong sense of variety even within a relatively compact area.
Waterways are a big part of what makes the forest memorable. The headwaters around Britannia Creek are in excellent condition, and the surrounding valleys carry the cool, shaded feel that comes with healthy riparian forest.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and autumn are usually the most comfortable times to be here. In spring, the forest is greener, creeks are often fuller and the cool upland country feels especially fresh. Autumn tends to bring clear air and milder walking weather after summer.
Winter can also suit walkers who enjoy misty forest conditions and running water, particularly in the wetter gullies and along creek catchments. Summer is often better for higher, more shaded parts of the forest, where the tree cover helps soften the heat.
Plants and Animals
Native vegetation around Yarra State Forest and its connected creek systems includes riparian forest, damp forest and wet forest, along with riparian thicket, swamp scrub, swampy riparian woodland and creekline herb-rich woodland. In some parts of the broader landscape there is also state-listed cool temperate rainforest, which hints at how moist and sheltered some of these valleys are.
The waterways flowing from the forest support important habitat values. The Little Yarra River has been identified as a drought refuge for a number of species, and rare or threatened animals recorded in this connected landscape include Growling Grass Frog, Macquarie Perch, Australian Grayling, White-bellied Sea-Eagle and Platypus. Rare plants in the same broader area include Tall Astelia and Matted Flax-lily.
