A Sanctuary in the Hills: Porter Scrub Conservation Park
Porter Scrub Conservation Park is a significant natural area located approximately 30 kilometres north-east of Adelaide, South Australia, near the town of Lobethal. Covering 104 hectares, the park is characterised by hilly terrain and is intersected by Howard Creek. It is a refuge for a diverse range of native flora and fauna, including several threatened species.
The park’s vegetation comprises predominantly woodland and open forest, dominated by mature stands of Messmate stringybark, Mountain gum, Pink gum, and River Red gum, interspersed with iconic South Australian Blue Gum. This diverse plant life supports a rich array of birdlife, including the opportunity to spot rare species such as the Australian Golden Whistler, Eastern Spinebill, Grey Fantail, and Scarlet robin.
Visitors should be cautious of old mine shafts within the park and adhere to designated tracks and trails. Access to the park is available via two entrances: the southern entrance on the corner of Maidmont and Lihou Roads, approximately 4 kilometres north-east of Lobethal, and the northern entrance on Burfords Hill Road, about 8.5 kilometres from Birdwood.
Established in 2005 to protect significant areas of remnant forest and woodland, Porter Scrub Conservation Park plays a vital role in conserving biodiversity. The park’s ecological importance is highlighted by the presence of endangered Candlebark Gum open forest and vulnerable Pink Gum and River Red Gum woodlands. Additionally, it provides habitat for threatened species such as the Southern Brown Bandicoot, Clover Glycine, and Spotted Quail-thrush.
While the park has a history of land use, including grazing, timber extraction, and talc mining, it has retained its ecological integrity. Today, it offers visitors the opportunity to experience a thriving natural ecosystem and contribute to its conservation.
