A Resilient Urban Park: O’Halloran Hill Recreation Park

O’Halloran Hill Recreation Park, part of Glenthorne National Park- Ityamaiitpinna Yarta, is a dynamic urban park located approximately 16 kilometres south of Adelaide, South Australia. Once cleared for grazing, the park has undergone significant regeneration over the past decades. Today, mature grey box and river red gum trees provide welcome shade for picnics and relaxation.

The park’s history is evident in the remnants of a blue-stone quarry, which supplied materials for many of Adelaide’s historic buildings. Visitors can explore the quarry site while enjoying stunning views of the city, the Adelaide Hills, and the coastline along the various fire access trails. For those seeking a more active experience, the park offers 18 kilometres of mountain bike trails catering to various skill levels.

While much of the park’s original vegetation was cleared, ongoing revegetation efforts have established important stands of grey box eucalyptus and other native species. This ecological restoration has attracted a growing diversity of wildlife, including woodland and grassland birds, reptiles, and even occasional sightings of western grey kangaroos and koalas.

The park’s geological history is also of interest. Situated near the Eden fault line, the underlying rock formations date back to the Precambrian era. The blue-stone quarry and the deep gullies that characterise the park’s topography are notable features.

O’Halloran Hill Recreation Park is accessible via Majors Road at Seaview Downs, with pedestrian access points along Davenport Street, Ridgefield Avenue, Greenfield Road, and Fowler Street. Cyclists can also access the park via the veloway on either side of the Southern Expressway.
