Gorges, Waterfalls & Aboriginal Culture near Katherine, Northern Territory

Steeped in Jawoyn culture and renowned for its dramatic landscapes, Nitmiluk National Park offers a unique blend of adventure and cultural immersion. Located roughly 320 kilometres south of Darwin in the Katherine region, the park is divided into two main sections: Nitmiluk Gorge to the south and Leliyn (Edith Falls) to the north, a 90-kilometre drive apart.

Nitmiluk Gorge, a series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River, is the park’s crown jewel. Witness the towering cliffs transform in colour throughout the day and explore the gorge by foot, canoe, or boat tour. The Nitmiluk Visitor Centre, located near the southern entrance, provides information on walks, tours, camping, and canoe rentals.

Leliyn (Edith Falls), a popular swimming destination 60 kilometres north of Katherine, offers a series of cascading waterfalls surrounded by lush monsoon forest. Hike to the upper pools for panoramic views or take a refreshing dip in the plunge pool below the main falls. Camping facilities are available for visitors seeking a longer stay.

The Jawoyn people have inhabited this land for millennia, and their culture is woven into the park’s very fabric. Respectful visitors can learn about Jawoyn traditions and stories through park programs or by visiting rock art sites scattered throughout the park.

Nitmiluk caters to walkers and hikers of all abilities. Choose from shorter walks like the moderately challenging Windolf Walk, which leads to Pat’s Lookout for breathtaking views of the gorge, or embark on the multi-day Jatbula Trail. This challenging 62-kilometre trek, suitable for experienced hikers, follows an ancient Aboriginal songline along waterfalls, monsoon rainforests, and sandstone landscapes.

The park offers camping facilities, while other accommodation options are available in nearby Katherine. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing day trip or an adventurous multi-day exploration, Nitmiluk National Park offers an unforgettable experience.
