Explore Mount Buangor State Park: A Walk in the Hills
Mount Buangor State Park is located on the traditional Country of the Eastern Maar Peoples. This park offers a diverse landscape of eucalypt forests, creek flats, and dramatic escarpments. The summit of Mount Buangor, the highest point in the area, provides breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
A network of approximately 15 kilometres of walking tracks wind through the park, with some trails extending into the neighbouring Mount Cole State Forest. Middle Creek offers a suitable camping location for larger groups and caravans. For experienced bushwalkers, the section of the Bukkertillible and Sugarloaf walks between The Cave and 2 Mile Circuit presents a more challenging and remote experience. Caution is advised, as the track can become slippery in wet conditions.
Situated between Ararat and Beaufort, approximately 200 kilometres west of Melbourne, Victoria, the park is accessed via Ferntree Gully Road off the Western Highway. Three camping areas are located within the park entrance: Bailes, Middle Creek, and Ferntree. All camping areas require advanced bookings and fees. Bailes is ideal for families, Middle Creek accommodates larger groups, and Ferntree offers a secluded experience.
While camping, take the opportunity to explore the park’s varied terrain, from lush fern gullies to towering eucalypts. Keep an eye out for the vibrant Crimson Rosellas and majestic Wedge-tailed Eagles that inhabit the area.
