Cape Willoughby Conservation Park: A Beacon of History

Cape Willoughby Conservation Park, located 27 kilometres southeast of Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, is renowned for its iconic lighthouse, the oldest operational lighthouse in the state. This historic site offers a captivating glimpse into the maritime heritage of the region, from the lives of its lighthouse keepers to the tales of shipwrecks along the dramatic coastline.

Visitors can explore the lighthouse and its surrounding grounds through guided tours, which depart daily. Please note that children under five years of age are not permitted to climb the lighthouse unless they are in an approved child carrier. To reach Cape Willoughby, travellers must first journey to Kangaroo Island via the SeaLink ferry, departing from Cape Jervis, approximately two hours south of Adelaide. The ferry crossing takes approximately 45 minutes.

The lighthouse played a crucial role in the early days of South Australian shipping, guiding vessels safely through the treacherous Backstairs Passage. Its construction, completed in 1852, was a significant undertaking, with workers living in tents during the two-year building period. The lighthouse’s sturdy granite structure and innovative technology of the time ensured its effectiveness as a navigational aid.

Over the years, the lighthouse underwent several upgrades, including the replacement of the original lantern and light source, as well as the installation of electricity and automation. Despite these advancements, the lighthouse remained an essential part of maritime safety until its full automation in 1992.

Today, Cape Willoughby Conservation Park offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and appreciate the remarkable engineering and human endeavour that shaped this historic site. While drones are prohibited within the park, visitors can enjoy the stunning coastal scenery through walks, bushwalks, and hikes along the park’s trails.
