Phoenix Circuit is a 4.2km, grade 1 hike located in Para Wirra Conservation Park, South Australia. The hike should take around 1.5 hours to complete.
Hike overview
This 4.2km circuit hike explores the former mine workings of Victoria Hill, a scene of much activity in the late 1860s. Interpretive signs provide information about mine shafts, mine workings and the former town that was once here. See the former pumping station and tramway tunnels.
The trail includes Bowden Cottage, which has a collection of mining equipment on display, a picnic area, shelter and toilets. The cottage is restored and houses the Barossa Goldfields Historical Society museum.
[As at July 2016:] Unlike trails in the southern part of Para Wirra Conservation Park, the trails are very well marked, thanks to the work of the Walking Trails Support Group. Trails are well marked, with maps at checkpoints, and interpretive signage.

About the region
This is a perfect park for immersing yourself in nature €“ for walking, picnicking, and observing native animal life. The park is also home to the Barossa Goldfields, where you can discover the ruins and the history of a once thriving mining operation.
There are over 100 species of birds living in the park, including the cheeky emus you'll see patrolling the picnic grounds. You can see kangaroos grazing at dawn and dusk, and on a warm day bearded dragons and sleepy lizards bask in the sunshine. If you're in luck you might also spot a short-beaked echidna, a shy creature whose diggings can be found throughout the park.
