Nukan Kungun Hike - Salt Creek to 42 Mile Crossing is a 25km, grade 1 hike located in Coorong National Park, South Australia. The hike should take around 2 days to complete.
Hike overview
Nukan Kungun Hike is a 25km trail through the Coorong National Park. Starting from Salt Creek it links some of the more popular trails in the park, concluding at the 42 Mile Crossing campground.
From the campground you may continue over the sand dunes to the ocean beach, a further 1.3km.
Secluded bush campsites are dotted along the trail.
Nakun Kungun, pronounced 'Nackan Koon-nun', is Ngarrindjeri for 'Looking and Listening'. The trail passes through several different plant communities including mallee woodlands, tall tea-tree shrublands and spinifex grasslands. It also passes numerous ephemeral sale lakes. Encounters with wildlife, particularly kangaroos, wombats and emus are common. If you are lucky you may even see an endangered malleefowl.
Suggested walk is to start at Salt Creek and walk one day (25km) south to camp at 42 Mile Crossing. After setting up camp, walk over the sand dunes to the coast. On the second day, return to Salt Creek. The walk could also be done one-way by using as car shuffle.
