New England Rail Trail is a 210km, grade 3 hike located in Country NSW, New South Wales. The hike should take around 14 days to complete.
Hike overview
This Trail is not developed. It is one of 17 potential Rail Trails in NSW.
A lot of the old railway stations have been preserved and refurbished by local community groups
The Tenterfield Railway Station has been turned into a museum with a lot of rolling stock and memorabilia at the station
The line went past Ben Lomond which at 4,473 feet above sea level, is the highest railway station in Australia
Wallangarra Station is on the NSW - QLD border, and was the change of guage station. All buildings and rail lines remain in situ
Larger towns of Armidale, Guyra, Glen Innes, and Tenterfield offer many accommodation and dining options
A possible rail trail from Armidale to Wallangarra. This would be a 210km trail through scenic mountain country. The old rail line passed through Guyra, Ben Lomond, Glen Innes, Deepwater, Tenterfield and finished on the border town of Wallangarra. Ben Lomond was the highest railway station in Australia, with Wallangarra being the change of guage station between NSW and Queensland.
Local groups are hoping to develop this former main line for some sections. Interest has been renewed since the formation of Rail Trails for NSW (RT4NSW). This group is actively lobbying the State Government to allow the development of rail trails on ex-gov lines in NSW. For more information click on the link below.
