A Coastal Wilderness: Western River Wilderness Protection Area

Western River Wilderness Protection Area is a significant conservation area located on the north coast of Kangaroo Island, approximately 30 kilometres west of Parndana, South Australia. Established to safeguard a diverse range of flora and fauna, the park is renowned for its extensive stands of Rough-barked Manna Gum, one of the largest surviving remnants of this rare species on public land.

The park is also a crucial habitat for the threatened Glossy Black-cockatoo, with its drooping sheoak and sugar gum woodlands providing essential food and shelter. Other endangered plant species, including the Spiral Sun-orchid, find refuge within the park’s boundaries.

The wilderness area features rugged coastal cliffs and is home to the headwaters of Western River. While opportunities for exploration abound, the park’s primary focus is on conservation. A single walking trail leading to Billy Goat Waterfall is the only developed visitor facility.

Western River Wilderness Protection Area offers a glimpse into the raw beauty of Kangaroo Island’s coastal wilderness. Visitors are encouraged to respect the delicate ecosystem and leave no trace.
