Ancient Volcano Country on the Gold Coast Hinterland

Overview

Springbrook National Park sits in the Gold Coast hinterland, south-west of the coast, where high forested plateaus, steep escarpments and deeply cut valleys give the area its striking shape. The park forms part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, recognised for its geology, evolutionary history and significant subtropical and cool temperate rainforest communities.

This is a place of cool mountain streams, dense rainforest and abrupt drops to the lowlands below. Springbrook is also part of the ancient Tweed volcano landscape, and that volcanic origin still explains much of what people notice first here, from the sheer cliffs and layered rock faces to the concentration of waterfalls and narrow creek gorges.

Highlights

The park’s real character comes from its dramatic landforms. Springbrook Plateau stands on the remnant rim of the old shield volcano, and the surrounding escarpments open onto broad views across the hinterland and out towards the coast. Water is a constant presence here, with waterfalls, cascades and creeks cutting through the plateau and canyon country.

Another distinctive feature is the contrast between enclosed rainforest and exposed high country. In a relatively compact area, the scenery shifts from lush creek lines and rock overhangs to open eucalypt forest and montane heath, giving Springbrook a layered, varied feel that sets it apart from many other parks in south-east Queensland.

Best Time to Visit

Springbrook can be rewarding at any time of year, but the cooler months are often the most comfortable for longer days out, especially when you want clear air and milder temperatures on the plateau. The park is generally cooler and wetter than the Gold Coast lowlands, which is part of what keeps its forests so rich and green.

After periods of rain, the waterfalls and creeks are often at their most impressive. In drier periods, the appeal shifts more to the escarpment views, the forest atmosphere and the change in vegetation across the plateau.

Plants and Animals

A large part of Springbrook is covered by rainforest rich in vines, palms, epiphytes and large trees, with other areas supporting open eucalypt forest and montane heath. These different plant communities reflect the park’s changes in elevation, exposure and moisture, and they are a big part of why the area has such high conservation value.

The World Heritage listing also reflects the presence of rare fauna and ancient plant lineages. Springbrook is known for relict Gondwanan flora and fauna, including cool temperate rainforest elements such as Antarctic beech in suitable higher, cooler parts of the plateau.
