Discover Morwell National Park: A Walk in the Strzelecki Ranges

Morwell National Park, located in the northern foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges, approximately 140 kilometres east of Melbourne, Victoria, offers a diverse landscape for exploration. Known for its tranquil picnic areas, forested gullies, and elusive native orchids, the park is a haven for nature enthusiasts.

The park’s terrain varies from dry eucalyptus forests dominated by towering mountain grey gums and blackwood trees to lush fern-filled gullies. This diverse environment supports a rich array of flora and fauna, including the iconic koala. Orchid enthusiasts will appreciate the park’s reputation as a hotspot for these delicate blooms, with species such as the bird orchid and the hyacinth orchid thriving in its understorey.

Morwell National Park provides opportunities for various levels of physical activity. Shorter walks explore the flatlands along Billys Creek and the old weir, while more challenging hikes ascend ridges offering panoramic views. The Fosters Gully Nature Trail is a popular choice, winding through grey gum and stringybark forests where lyrebirds can sometimes be heard.

For longer adventures, the 100-kilometre Grand Strzelecki Walking Track connects Morwell National Park with Tarra Bulga National Park, traversing rainforest valleys and open farmland.
