A Tale of Two Mountains: Exploring Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park

Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park, a vast wilderness area encompassing 18,400 hectares, lies in Victoria’s northeast, nestled near the upper reaches of the Murray River. Named after its two defining peaks, Mount Burrowa and Pine Mountain, the park offers a diverse landscape teeming with natural wonders.

The contrasting landscapes of these two mountains provide a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Pine Mountain, a drier region and Australia’s largest monolith, boasts unique plant life, including rare species like the Phantom Wattle. Mount Burrowa, with its higher rainfall, is home to lush wet forests and a wider variety of vegetation.

Hikers of all levels can find their challenge here. The park offers a network of trails, from leisurely strolls to multi-day treks that test seasoned adventurers. Explore the cascading Cudgewa Bluff Falls, take in panoramic views from The Lookouts Walking Track, or conquer the challenging Pine Mountain Summit walk.

Beyond the stunning scenery, the park is a haven for wildlife. Keep an eye out for the elusive Superb Lyrebird, spot Black Wallabies and Eastern Grey Kangaroos grazing in open areas, or listen for the calls of over 180 bird species recorded in the park.

Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park is located approximately 120 kilometres east of Albury-Wodonga and 25 kilometres northwest of Corryong. Easily accessible via the Murray Valley Highway, the park offers a scenic drive along Cudgewa Bluff Road, leading to many popular visitor areas.

Before embarking on your adventure, ensure your safety by checking the latest park conditions and fire safety information on the Parks Victoria website.
