Beards Gully and Deadman's Loop is a 9.5km, grade 4 hike located in Brisbane Ranges National Park, Victoria. The hike should take around 4 hours to complete.
Hike overview
Situated in one of the lesser known corners of the Brisbane Ranges, the Beards Gully and Deadman's Loop follows Southerland Creek, just south wets of the historic ghost town of Steiglitz.
Expect hard off-track walking, steep climbs and dangerous mine shaft areas. Walk down Sailors Track and turn north on reaching Sutherlands Creek. Look for signs of early gold mining. Watch your step! Old mine shafts and uncovered holes are often hidden by long grass along the edge of the creek. Follow the creek north, rock hopping along the creek where possible.
Upstream you may see quartz in the creek bed. After walking about two hours, look for interesting rock formations on the left side of the creek, north of Miners Track.

About the region
Little more than an hour's drive from Melbourne takes you to the state's richest wildflower habitat. Set in a low range of mountains dissected by rocky gullies, the unusual geology of Brisbane Ranges National Park has preserved plants that have long since vanished from the region, together with a correspondingly diverse bird population and the greatest density of koalas in Victoria.

Lynda Maddison I think I might have done this one too. 🤔
Muriel Pepper Steven Parker I don’t think I’ve done it and it sounds fun so let’s put it in the list 😁
Lynda Maddison Like. Let’s do it.
Lynda Maddison if I remember correctly part of this walk is in a dry riverbed which is very overgrown. Best time to do it would be winter when the danger doodles are asleep.
Fun hike this one. Nice bit of exploration along the creek.
Darren Edwards must be good after all the 🌧
